Where to Take Old Furniture Near You in Colorado

Searching for somewhere to take an old couch usually returns a list of phone numbers and a lot of dead ends. Here's how the options break down along the Front Range, what each one is good for, and what to ask before you load the truck.
Donation centers — best for furniture that still works
Thrift stores and furniture banks are the first stop for anything usable: dressers, tables, bookcases, chairs and clean upholstered pieces. National chains, local charity shops and habitat-style building-supply stores all take furniture in varying degrees, and some will schedule a pickup for large donations.
Two rules: call ahead for current hours and accepted items, and be honest about condition. Staff turn away furniture every day that someone spent an hour loading, usually because of stains, smells or damage they couldn't see in a photo.
County recycling and hard-to-recycle drop-offs
Boulder County, Broomfield and Weld County all run recycling and hard-to-recycle programs with periodic drop-off events. They're the right place for electronics, mattresses at some events, scrap metal and household hazardous waste — and they're usually not the right place for a whole couch, because mixed-material furniture isn't accepted in most recycling streams.
Check your county's waste page for the current event schedule, what's accepted, and whether you need to pre-register. These programs change often, so a phone call is worth more than a blog post — including this one.
Transfer stations and landfills
Every county has a transfer station or landfill that will take bulky items for a fee, usually charged by weight or by the load. It's the reliable fallback when nothing else fits, and it's usually cheaper than people expect for a single piece of furniture.
Bring a tarp or straps — loads have to be secured — and expect to unload it yourself. Check the scale hours before you go; many close earlier than the gate.
Municipal bulky-item pickup
Several Front Range cities offer curbside bulky-item collection, either on a set schedule or by appointment. It's typically the cheapest option available, sometimes included in your utility bill.
The catch is timing and placement: you'll wait for the scheduled date, you have to get the item to the curb yourself, and there are limits on size and quantity. Confirm the rules for your city before you put anything out, and never leave furniture at the curb on an unscheduled day.
A haul-away crew — the option that does the carrying
If the piece is upstairs, heavy, or you don't have a truck, a haul-away service is usually the practical answer. You don't load anything, you don't wait for a pickup date, and the crew decides where each item goes: donation center first, recycler for metal and mattresses, landfill only for what's left.
Ask two questions before you book: is the quote firm, and where does my stuff actually go? A crew that can't answer the second one is probably taking everything straight to the dump.
What we do with it
We're based in Erie and we haul furniture across Erie, Lafayette, Louisville, Superior, Broomfield, Longmont, Boulder, Westminster, Thornton, Greeley, Loveland, Commerce City and Windsor. Usable pieces go to local donation centers, metal and electronics to recycling, mattresses to a mattress recycler where one is available, and only true trash to the landfill.
