How to Get Rid of Old Furniture

A couch on the curb feels like a solution until the city tags it, the weather gets to it, or your HOA sends a letter. Here are the real options for getting rid of old furniture in Colorado, roughly in order of how much work they take from you — plus what each one actually costs you in time.

Start with the piece: is it actually trash?

Before you haul anything outside, look at the frame, the cushions and the fabric. Furniture with a solid frame and clean upholstery usually has a second life; furniture with water damage, pet damage, mold or a broken frame usually does not. If you can't picture a friend taking it, a donation center probably can't take it either.

That quick check matters because every other option depends on it. Donation and resale only work for furniture that still functions. Recycling and haul-away are for the rest.

Option 1: donate it

Donation is the best outcome when the piece is still usable — it stays out of the landfill and helps someone else furnish a home. Most donation centers take couches, dressers, tables and bookcases, but many refuse mattresses, upholstered items with stains or tears, and anything that has been outside.

Call ahead before you load the truck. Ask two questions: do you take this item today, and is there a drop-off time window? Thrift stores close their donation doors when their floor space fills up, and showing up with a sectional at the wrong hour is a wasted trip.

Option 2: sell it or give it away

For furniture in good shape, listing it is often faster than you'd expect — especially in neighborhood and local buy-and-sell groups, where a solid wood dresser usually moves in days. Price it low, post clear photos, and say whether the buyer has to move it themselves.

If you just want it gone, list it as free with the condition that they carry it out. You'll get a lot of messages and some no-shows, so set a pickup window and give it to whoever shows up first.

Option 3: recycle what you can

Furniture is mostly materials: steel frames, wood, foam, fabric and springs. Metal gets recycled almost everywhere that takes scrap. Wood, foam and fabric are harder — most curbside programs won't take them, and mixed-material furniture is difficult for single-stream recycling.

Mattresses are their own category. Some communities have mattress recycling drop-offs that separate the steel, foam and fabric; a mattress left at the curb usually just goes to the landfill. Search for a mattress recycler near you before you decide.

Option 4: schedule a bulky-item pickup

Many Front Range cities offer residential bulky-item pickup a few times a year, either free or for a small fee. It's the cheapest option if the timing works — but you'll be waiting for the scheduled date, you'll usually have to get the item to the curb yourself, and there are limits on what's accepted and how much you can put out.

Check your city's waste page for the current schedule and rules. If the next pickup is two months out, or you can't move the piece to the curb on your own, this option probably isn't worth the wait.

Option 5: have it hauled away

A haul-away crew is the option that costs money and saves everything else. We show up, carry the piece out of the house — upstairs, downstairs, basement, backyard — load it, and take it to a donation center, a recycler or the landfill depending on its condition. You don't rent a truck, you don't wait for a pickup date, and you don't hurt your back.

Pricing is based on how much room your items take up in the truck, how heavy they are and how far we carry them. Text a photo of what needs to go to 720-333-3497 and we'll give you a firm number before we start — free, with no obligation.

The short version

Usable furniture: donate or list it, and call the donation center first. Worn-out furniture: recycle the metal, and use a bulky pickup if the schedule fits. Anything heavy, upstairs, or urgent: have it hauled, and get the price in writing before the crew starts loading.
